Kelvedon experience trumps Coggy youth.

U14 match report.

The U14s put in a spirited but ultimately unsuccessful attempt to do the double over a very good Kelvedon side on a sunny Friday night at the Airfield, where new levels of Coggeshall's infamous socialness was set by the appearance of chilled white wine bottles amongst the attending mothers.
Kelvedon won the toss and put Coggy in and let rip their district bowlers. Jonjo and Harry Doubleday were just getting to weather the storm when, as often happens, the worst ball of the spell, a leg side full toss brought a leading edge from McCabe and the first wicket down. Louis Gibson came to the crease, and after a few weeks where he has been a bit low on confidence he started to eek out some twos and ones to get the scoreboard moving. Sadly, we just could not get the score board racing and when Louis was out for 19 as the sixth wicket in the 15th over we were only on 59. Sam Docherty then came to the party and added a rapid 19 in a partnership of 23 with Alasdair Marlowe before Maxi Brassington and Xander Mohan chipped in a useful 12 partnership in the last two overs.
So a respectable but probably below par score to defend of 94 saw the match hinge on the ability of Coggy to get in amongst their strong top order and dry up the runs. It never quite happened but the boys stuck at it really well. Kelvdeon got away to a strong start putting on 39 for the first wicket before Josh Morton struck after a good catch by Ellis Valentine, Alasdair Marlowe then weighed in with two wickets before Charlie Smith bowled an absolute jaffa on his first ball to claim another wicket. But with district players still coming in each time a wicket fell it was always going to be tough and after 17 overs Kelvedon took the match to win by 6 wickets.
The boys though stuck at it and credit to them for making a match of it against a good team. The U14s have had some tough games but continue to become more competitive and improve. There is still plenty to work on but they play hard, with a smile on their face and look keen and eager. special thanks to George Blackwell for helping out and getting encouragement from a senior player rather than my tired voice shouting to move your feet, pitch it up and run hard.

All attention now goes to tuesday and a game against Colchester.
