A tough afternoon for the 2's

CTCC Sunday 2nd XI VS Real Oddies 14th June 2015
It was always going to be a difficult day for the “New 2’s”, when they travelled to the Garrison ground Colchester to take on the Real Oddies, but it got significantly more difficult when they had to play with just 10 men! The side was as usual weighted toward the young but this week it was a little too weighted with just 4 players over the age of 14!
My first decision of the day was not whether to bat or bowl as yet again I had lost the toss but having been asked to field I needed to find a keeper. Having no regular keeper in the side and seeing the size of the pitch and the length of the outfield grass I took on the responsibility myself! Much to the amusement of the whole team! The banter began early!
After a brief delay to see if the rain stopped (it hadn’t) the New 2’s took to the field. CTCC started with experience in Tom Rowe and Mark Brassington to get us off to a steady start. Both bowlers hit their line and length but the wicket was proving to be slow, low and unresponsive. Neither opener was having much trouble defending but the runs were not flowing either.
Tom took a break after 3 overs for just 8 runs and Mark after 4 overs for 9. Next up were the u14 pairing of Louis Gibson and Jonjo McCabe both known for their mild manners and miserly bowling. Louis performed as expected but from nowhere we saw a new “fire breathing” Jonjo . Riled by what he though was harsh wide he steamed back in and let both bastmen know he wasn’t happy. Nasty quick deliveries, a few meaningful glares at the batsmen and the odd comment under his breath (Don’t worry J&D he was very polite!) showed a side to JM that we hadn’t seen before, and we all liked it! His bowling figures of 0-26 from 6 overs reflected a very impressive spell. Louis also put in a tidy but much quieter first spell of 0-16 off 4.
Our bowlers were performing well but we couldn’t make the breakthrough we needed, the runs were coming and the batsmen reasonably comfortable. JJ Ford and brother Jacob were next to try and dismantle the opening pair and JJ came up with the goods. A beautiful full in swinging full delivery had opener Pearson LBW for 16 with the score on 70 off 19 overs. Brother Jacob was struggling a little with his run up and the slope to the wicket but still bowled a nice 3 over spell. JJ made a second breakthrough in his 5th over with another super delivery to bowl the Nr3. At this stage Real Oddies were 89-2 from 22 overs. Not getting away but the wickets in hand were a worry. Louis Gibson came back on for another spell, this time bowling some off spin which he did well but by this stage the RO opener Hall was seeing the ball well and beginning to accelerate. However Louis did pick up the wicket of Duck for 20 which pleased the bowler no end! Mark Brassington came back for his next spell and continued to trouble the batsmen without reward until he finally bowled Hall for an excellent 72.Mark finished with impressive figures of 1-28 from 8 overs. Tom “ highest wicket taker according to his own stats” Rowe came back on to finish up from one end picking up a couple of wickets and Jonjo McCabe finished up from the other end with another aggressive spell of 3 overs for 17 with 1 wicket. The Real Oddies finished on 196 for 7. A good batting effort and a huge effort by the CTCC boys in the field especially considering there were only 10 players.
As stand in wicket keeper I would like to mention that there were just 4 byes conceded ( don’t believe the rumours !) which is a credit to the bowlers line rather than any athleticism on my part because as they will confirm there was very little! Thanks (???!!!) must also go to Alex “the knees” Wickens for his words of support (not) as he wandered around the boundary (chuckling!) at my efforts!

The CTCC batting can be rushed through as, apart from a decent 24 from Tom “am I leading run scorer aswell?” Rowe there was little of note to mention.
Having a lot of youngsters in the side is the future for CTCC and we will have days like this when things don’t go quite as planned but the lads should not be disheartened it was great effort and they will learn a lot from this loss.
My thanks go to the Oddies for playing a tough game in a the right spirit!
Well done everyone…now where are those massage oils!
