Saturday saw the opening day of our Two Counties league challenge and it could not have started better. The ground looked great, the sun was shining, the new scoreboard was working and new captain George Blackwell won the toss!
Batting first CTCC saw good early season contributions from Jimmy Reece (43) and Dane Cleaver (69) up front and an important stand from Lloyd Edwards (24) and Rob Cross (27) towards the end which pushed the CTCC score to a challenging but not unattainable target of 219. For Witham, J Wakelin contributed 4 wickets keeping the CTCC batsmen in check.
Witham responded with R Green scoring 62 and G Taylor 24 but the Coggy bowlers kept the scoring under control, eventually bowling Witham out 30 odd runs short. George Blackwell with 4-34, Rob Cross 2-46 and Carl, Dale and Bert all chipping in with a wicket helped produce a fine all round team bowling effort.
The only downside was the injury to Will Blackwell that saw an early exit to Colchester General but fortunately he returned sans plaster! A quick mention has to go to all the supporters who turned up on Saturday particularly the Witham contingent who added to an excellent afternoon’s entertainment and a busy start for Ellie behind the bar!
