A good team performance and a close game, but not quite enough to beat Colchester

7th July 2015 6.00 pm Coggeshall U12 V Colchester U12 (Home – Harefield)

Our thanks must go to Rick and Steve for preparing our wicket and being on site for moral support!

Many thanks to Jo Raine for organising tonight’s fixture and also to Doug Raine for scoring and putting up so well with a rather demanding Colchester umpire!!

Game structure: 20 overs - Coggeshall won the toss and elected to bat

Conditions- dry/sunny and an influential, good south westerly breeze

I told the boys that we needed to be scoring 7 an over to have a chance of beating Colchester who not surprisingly were fielding a strong side, 4 of which I am led to believe were District / Essex players. We started off slowly and were 38 from 9 overs at the fall of the third wicket. JJ came in and steadied the middle order and ended up getting his 50 along with Jack R, who also looked to be in fine fettle. Our boys scored 92 and Colchester contributed 14 extras making a grand total of 116 from the 20 overs….. somewhat short of my target of 140!

Colchester’s opening pair put on 54 from 9 overs at the fall of their first wicket. Seb D caught their opener off Jack R with a one handed beauty at mid–on (the men’s 1st XI would have been pleased with that one!)

Colchester had a line-up of strong batsmen, who managed to score the winning runs with only 9 balls of their innings remaining. Colchester scored 73 runs, we donated an eye watering 45 extras equalling 118.

Needless to say that it was quite a close game, and I guess closer than Colchester thought it might have been. We clearly need to concentrate on reducing the number of extras that we give away (Wides and Byes being the worst contributors)

Overall, a good performance by all the players. We defended a pretty low score well, albeit we lost the game by giving away too many extras…… onto the next game this Friday 10th July V Great Bromley 6.00pm at Harefield ….. plenty to work on.
